Other Kinds of Foods

A hearty meal may not always be a healthy meal but a healthy meal should leave you feeling full and content. There are some foods we ignore or pay less attention to because they are not used as full meals. Instead, we use these foods to supplement meals. But they deserve more attention than they receive.

Take, for example, mushrooms and other fungi-based foods. These are rich sources of proteins and other nutrients. But they are also flavorful and most often we use them to adorn larger foods such as pasta and beef. Not many people enjoy eating a full fungul meal, but there are some foods that can provide you with that experience.

Another example is the category of nuts. We use nuts to garnish many dishes. We also use nuts to make pie crusts, cake decorations, and cookies. But though you can certainly sit down and eat a can of nuts as an entire meal that is generally not recommended. Not only do we tend to pack our nuts in a lot of salt, they can be loaded with fats that contribute to soaring cholesterol numbers.

We are advised to eat a lot of fruit in our diet, but if you eat only fruits you'll be ingesting a huge amount of sugar. Fruits are naturally sugary products and as such should be eaten only in moderation. Nonetheless, we leave them out in the open in bowls and on platters, always inviting us to indulge in a "healthy" fruity snack. While it's true that apples are both delicious and healthy, it's not healthy to eat only apples for a full meal.

If we're not allowed to eat these kinds of foods all by themselves, then we should look for good matches to balance our meals and our days. For example, if you're eating a high-sugar food you should match it with high-protein and moderate-fat foods, because the mix of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates will help your body metabolize the food properly.

Our favorite foods may work better as treats we reward ourselves with after accomplishing an important goal, such as changing our diet and lifestyle choices to pursue a happier, healthier path through life.
